Rick Reo's Design Project

Design Project Guidelines
Students will write a working document that structures the design process of their podcast. Students should not attempt to write the full document at the start. The course is designed to scaffold the process of writing this document. Students will submit progressive drafts of this document and receive feedback from the instructor. Use the Discussion tab above your design doc page in the course wiki to ask questions about each section when prompts are unclear. I will also use Discussion tab to leave feedback on your sections each week.

For most sections, a paragraph or two is sufficient. Please try to format the information for each section so that it is easily scanned.

Design Idea

Briefly describe the educational podcast you have in mind.

  • What is your learning goal(s) for the series? What do you hope to achieve when listeners tune in? (Describe the state the learner after listening, not your personal project goal)
  • Why should they learn it through podcasts?
  • What podcasts series or other media shows will your podcast be like? Provide a link if you can.
  • What media format do you plan to use: audio only, enhanced podcast, video, screencast, or other? Given the media format you choose, what media file type(s) is used for output?

Audience

Describe the target learner population.

  • Who will listen to your podcasts? How big of an audience do you seek?
  • What needs of your audience does your podcast meet?
  • When will your audience listen to your podcasts?
  • Why will they subscribe? Why won't they unsubscribe?

Content

Provide a list of the content that will be presented in your podcast series.

  • What types of content and resources does your topic and audience require?
  • Briefly outline the content that will be presented in episode 1, episode 2 and future podcasts.
  • Will you need to include references or attribute sources in your podcasts? Address copyright issues.
  • In addition to the main topic content, what other types of audio clips, sound effects, or other media will you use to produce the podcasts?

Format

Describe the style and format of your podcasts. By format I mean the structural organization of elements that make up the podcast (and may recur) including their duration and any special effects applied. If you script the first episode, you can include an outline of the script.

  • What is your reasoning behind the type or style of educational podcast you chose? What stylistic approach will you take for each episode?
  • Discuss your plans for the format you intend to use for each podcast?
  • What is the length of each episode? On what schedule will episodes be made available?
  • Describe any recurring elements in each episode, for example:
+ Show or host identification credits (E.g., identification of any source materials and also thanking any special guest and sponsors)
+ Intro or transitional music clips
+ Segment start/finish audio clips, short tip or teaser interludes or segments that are used to breakup longer segments. (E.g., “Nuptial Nuggets”, short tips from real brides)
  • Will you need to make any special arrangements to record your podcasts?
  • What are the standard settings for optimal quality of the media format you chose?

Evaluate & Refine

Design self-evaluation: Students will document a self-evaluation of the initial recording.

  • How did you evaluate the sound (and/or video) quality of your recording?
  • What types of edits did you make to your audio files?
  • How might you improve on future recordings?
